Good news for students looking to begin a career in healthcare: Indian River State College (91¶ÌÊÓƵ) has extended its application deadlines for individuals interested in careers in medical assisting, dental assisting and health information technology. Medical assistants, under the direction of a physician, take and record vital signs and medical histories, prepare patients for examination, draw blood, administer medications and injections, perform minor surgery, schedule appointments, maintain medical records and assist with billing and coding. The average salary for medical assistants in the state of Florida is $32,000 per year (EMSI employment data).
Dental assistants seek employment in private dental offices, dental schools, hospitals, clinics or public health settings where they set up equipment, sterilize instruments, and take radiographs and impressions. Dental assistants earn an average of $37,000 per year in Florida (EMSI employment data).
Medical assisting and dental assisting are full-time programs on the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Main Campus in Fort Pierce. Applicants must be age 18 or older and possess a minimum 2.0 GPA.
For those interested in the business side of healthcare, the Health Information Technology program–offered completely online–trains students to accurately compile, analyze and maintain medical records consistent with the healthcare industry’s numerical coding system. Graduates can earn an average salary of $38,000 per year in the state of Florida (EMSI employment data).
